> Introduction

The Netherlands Association for Landscape Architecture (NVTL) promotes and fosters high quality garden and landscape architecture in the Netherlands. We represent the interests of the profession in many areas of public life, stimulate the further development of the profession and bring clients into contact with qualified landscape architects.

The NVTL is an open association that warmly welcomes all those with a keen interest in landscape architecture. With more than 800 members, the NVTL represents a broad spectrum of Dutch professional practice. This makes the Association the obvious platform for professional development and promoting the cause of garden and landscape architecture in the Netherlands in its broadest sense.

> Mission statement

The mission of the NVTL is to create more attractive and functional living and working environments. We do this in cooperation with other spatial development and environmental disciplines.. As landscape architects we provide an independent and professional service and take our social and ethical responsibilities seriously.

The NVTL provides its members with a platform for the dissemination of ideas, exchange of knowledge and reflection on professional practice, as well as opportunities to expand professional networks. In addition, the Association stimulates dialogue between its members in teaching, research and practice, enabling them to enrich each other’s work and further improve professional standards.
The Association represents the interests of its members across society and is the primary source of information on and first point of contact with the profession. The NVTL aims for widespread recognition of the profession within Dutch society; we want to increase awareness of the specific qualities we have to offer and raise the profile of the profession.

We have translated this mission statement into four goals, which guide the focus of all our activities:
  • Promoting the profession
  • Providing professional support to our members
  • Maintaining the quality of professional practice
  • Stimulating further development of the profession

> History

The NVTL was established in 1983 by the merger of the Bond van Nederlandse Tuinarchitecten (BNT) and the Vereniging voor Tuin- en Landschapsarchitectuur (VTL).

The history of the Association can be traced back to 16 May 1922, when a number of landscape architects met in Utrecht and formed the Bond van Nederlandse Tuinarchitecten (BNT) under the chairmanship of the famous Dutch garden architect Hugo Poortman.

In the early years the main aim of the BNT was to promote the interests of qualified garden architects independently of other design professions. Registered members could use the designation ‘BNT’ after their names to indicate that they were independent consultants in garden architecture. This designation is still used by members who are listed in the Architects Register and adhere to the Code of Conduct.
