The Moscow Architecture Biennale invites professional landscape architects from a selected number of Western European countries to participate in the Biennale by preparing an exhibitionpanel on a realized project for the design of a courtyard. The designs will be exhibited, show at a conference on urban courtyards and published on the Biennale website.

The aim is to show how landscape architecture can contribute to a better living environment and can offer an enormous variety - something that is desparately needed in the uniform Russian housing area's.

The aim is not only to show the work of foreign landscape architects, but also to bring Russian clients in contact with them. For Russia, landscape architecture as it is understood nowadays in Western Europe is still quite new, and foreign expertise is in high demand. This is why for reference purposes we will publish information on the projects and the firms involved on the Biennale website.

Information Courtyard Exhibition

THE BIENNALE, ARCH MOSCOW AND GARDEN FEST The 4th Moscow Architecture Biennale will take place from May 21 to May 25 2014This exhibition is organized in the framework of the Arch-Moscow. It's the most important event in the field of architecture in Russia that has been held every year since 1992. In five days, the exhibition attracts over 25.000 visitors – not only architects, but also developers and private clients. Since 2001, the exhibition also has a section devoted to landscape architecture named Garden Fest. Your project will be shown in this part of the exhibition.

Theme: Urban Blocks

The theme of the Moscow Architecture Biennale is The Urban Block. New policies are aiming at replacing the practice of constructing high-rise pre-fab housing areas with an urbanism that is based on urban block structures. Essential for the urban block is the clear division between public space and the semi-private courtyard. The courtyard is not only used primarily by the inhabitants, they also are its collective owner. This is why the courtyard can serve as the catalyst for the emergence of communities that can replace the abstract collectivity of the Soviet period.

The exhibition is meant for projects for courtyards that have been realized within the last 10 years and designed by professional landscape architects (members of professional unions of landscape architects) from the following countries: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, the United Kingdom, Ireland, France, Switzerland and Austria.

Projects will have to be screened by the curator (Bart Goldhoorn), who will judge if they fit to the concept of the exhibition and demonstrate sufficient artistic quality. Participants are very welcome to come to the exhibition and take part in a conference on landscape architecture in housing districts that will be held on May 22, 2014. If you will inform us ahead of your visit we will let the conference participants and representatives of the press know about your presence.
