Publication

‘Een vereniging van tuinkunstenaars’ (An association of garden artists)

The long awaited book by publishing house Blauwdruk, created on the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Dutch Society for Garden and Landscape Architecture. Not only does the book reflect on the founding of the BNT, its founders and their motivations, it also draws connections with the current state of the field. The objectives of the association in 1922 are still remarkably relevant for NVTL today. The book includes texts by Erik A. de Jong, Ben Kuipers and Young NVTL, photo essays by Jeroen Bosch and portraits of (board) members of the first hour and a selection of their projects:

Pieter Westbroek written by Anja Guinée, Leonard Springer and Henri Hartogh Heys van Zouteveen by Patricia Debie, Hugo Poortman by Anneke Coops, Jacoba Hingst by Sandra den Dulk, Tine Cool by Liesbeth Missel, Wim Sluiter, Jo Bouwens and Anthonij Herman Haarsma van Oucoop by Eric Blok, Jan Jacob Denier van der Gon by Karin Laarakker, Samuel Voorhoeve by Rob Aben and Jeroen Bosch, Jan Bijhouwer by Gerrie Andela, Adriaan van Laren by Carla Oldenburger, Gustav Adolf Overdijkink by Henk van Blerck and Dirk Tersteeg by Gerrie Angela and Anja Guinée.

On 24 October, we are organising a wonderful two-part programme for NVTL members and guests to celebrate the publication, consisting of an excursion and a programme of talks at the CASA Architecture Centre, led by host Ton Schulte.

We will walk past the location where the BNT was founded, Hotel Riche, and follow the Singels (boulevards) of Arnhem, designed by Springer and Poortman. These have changed dramatically over time. Contemporary developments will also be discussed during the excursion, including the Janssingel, Blauwe Golven and Onderlangs (Veenenbos en Bosch), Rijnkade and Jansbeek (PoelmansReesink). Back at CASA, our knowledge will be tested in the Singel quiz, and speakers will take the floor, including Harry Harsema, initiator and publisher of the book, in conversation on video with Erik A. de Jong, Jeroen Bosch, Joeri de Bekker and former chairmen and woman of NVTL. The book will be handed out free of charge to NVTL members present.
