State exam Architects’ title
If you have worked for at least seven years as a spatial designer, in the position of interior designer, architectural designer, landscape designer or urban designer, you may be eligible to register and obtain the title.
This can be done by taking an examination coordinated and administered by the Architects Register. The examination tests your design skills and knowledge relevant to the title. The exact criteria are set out in the Examination Regulations under the Architects Title Act.
The Architects Register is responsible for coordinating the alternative routes to the title; this is one of its executive tasks as representative of the Architects Title Act. The examination is one of the routes to the title.
The examination consists of two parts spread over a calendar year:
- In the first part, the portfolio interview, candidates are assessed to determine whether they have sufficient experience to complete the design assignment.
- The second part consists of a thesis (which you write in the summer) and a design assignment. You carry out the design assignment in the autumn, over a period of eight working days at the office in The Hague.
Candidates who successfully complete the first part are allowed to take part in the second part of the exam. Finally, there is an exam interview in which the thesis and the design are discussed.
The registration deadline for participation in the examination in the calendar year 2026 is 31 December 2025 at the latest.
