On 20 November, the publication Green Heritage in the City was presented. This book offers knowledge about the preservation of monumental greenery in the city and inspiration for sustainable design. Green heritage gives cities their identity, provides space for people to meet, promotes biodiversity and helps to cool the urban environment. The book is a relevant and richly illustrated reference work for landscape architects, urban planners, policy makers and (local) green space managers.
Gardens, parks and avenues make our cities liveable and attractive. Created by previous generations, they are a natural part of our daily lives. They provide cooling, and space for sports, socialising and relaxation. At the same time, they have a fascinating history.
Green heritage in the city shows how these natural spaces came into being and how they contribute to the city’s identity. From medieval beguinages to a Post 65 roof garden. How functional allotments and cemeteries are transforming into biodiverse oases.
Preserving green heritage is a challenge. Intensive use, new construction and climate adaptation force difficult choices. How can the knowledge and ideas of the past provide inspiration for the green city of the future?
