LAOS Opens Second Branch in Utrecht

LAOS landscape urbanism, now comprising more than twenty employees, is opening a second office in Utrecht. Although the firm is originally based in the north of the Netherlands, it consistently works from the existing context: the landscape, the history, and the identity of a place.
According to LAOS, the expansion to Utrecht is a logical next step. Within the firm’s approach, proximity plays an important role: working close to projects contributes to the quality of design and collaboration. In addition to projects in the north of the country, LAOS is increasingly involved in assignments in the central and southern regions of the Netherlands. With an office in Utrecht, the firm can maintain a more permanent presence there.
Municipalities and provinces are increasingly recognizing that major spatial challenges require a landscape-led approach. This aligns with the vision the firm has upheld for many years: landscape first, then building; water systems first, then neighbourhoods; identity first, then design. This approach fits within the broader spatial transitions facing the Netherlands.
From Utrecht as well, LAOS continues to work according to the same principles: rooted in the landscape, focused on connection, and attentive to simplicity in complex challenges. From this foundation, the firm works on a range of locations across the Netherlands.
The Utrecht office will launch with a team of five staff members in the disciplines of urban design and landscape architecture. The team is led by managing director and landscape architect Mathijs Dijkstra, together with urban designer and office manager Alaleh Kouhkan. The Utrecht team works in close collaboration with the existing team in Groningen, sharing knowledge and experience while maintaining an unchanged approach.
