Study: working towards women-friendly cities
A city in which everyone feels safe and welcome requires a different way of looking and designing. Witteveen+Bos has therefore taken the initiative for a design research project into safe and inclusive public outdoor spaces, with the female perspective as its starting point. Within this research, we will collaborate with municipalities in the Netherlands and Belgium, as well as a broad network of societal partners.
What are the aims?
We will map opportunities and bottlenecks for women-friendly and inclusive cities. The research begins with a literature review, supplemented by practical research such as walking interviews and surveys.
The data and the knowledge of our experts and partners will be combined into a design principles toolbox and subsequently tested through design-oriented research in real-world case studies of our partners.
Who is participating?
The participating cities and municipalities are Gemeente Arnhem, Gemeente Breda, Gemeente Deventer, Gemeente Eindhoven, Gemeente Groningen, stad Leuven (BE), Gemeente Leiden and Stad Mechelen (BE) and Maaike Schravesande MRE on behalf of Heijmans and Vincent Luyendijk, specialist in healthy living environments and active within ‘Openbare Ruimtemakers voor Meiden‘.
