‘De Community of Practice: Metropolitaan landschap als bron voor brede welvaart’ is organising a conference on the integration of metropolitan green spaces into large-scale housing developments. During the conference, spatial research into the landscapes surrounding these areas will be presented, and discussions will be held with participants on where and how the landscape can be strengthened at this scale.
Housing was a key theme in the most recent Dutch parliamentary elections and is expected to feature prominently again in the upcoming municipal elections. Both the national government and local authorities currently have numerous plans for new housing, with a particular focus on 21 large-scale development areas. However, all these homes also require a high-quality living environment: with sufficient amenities and employment nearby, as well as adequate green space. Can large-scale greening areas be developed alongside large-scale housing development areas?
During the conference, this question will be explored in depth. The central issue is how green spaces can grow alongside housing development at the metropolitan scale. The impact of large-scale housing development areas at the metropolitan level will be examined. If housing is approached at scale, then green space must also be considered at scale. This applies both spatially, through structuring elements such as green wedges, belts and corridors, and strategically, by examining which partners, networks and governance structures are required to address this challenge. Vereniging Deltametropool is currently conducting a spatial study analysing the 21 large-scale housing locations within their broader spatial context.
