On Thursday 9 October 2025, the National Green Day will take place at the Forum Groningen, organised by Steenbreek Foundation, the Municipality of Groningen and the Province of Groningen. The day also marks the 10th anniversary of Stichting Steenbreek, which was founded in Groningen in 2015 and is returning to the city where it began for this occasion.
The available space around us is becoming increasingly scarce. How do we find a balance between densification and greening in combination with a major housing challenge? How do we ensure a climate-proof and biodiverse living environment that is and remains affordable? How can we include the importance and added value of greenspace in building projects from the start and thus contribute to the quality of life and social cohesion in neighbourhoods? After all, a healthy living environment is literally vital for everyone who lives and works there.
The green space as the community centre of the future. A meeting place where people come together. Working together in the greenery as a connecting factor for young and old. Gardening together as a contribution to healthy and pleasant neighbourhoods and districts.
The programme starts at 10.00 am (walk-in from 9.30 am) with a plenary session, which will feature inspiring speakers – including some from Stichting Steenbreek, the municipality of Groningen and social initiatives such as the food innovator ‘Toentje’. There will be room for interaction with the audience and the Stone breaker of the Year trophy will be awarded, a prize for projects that combine greening with education or social involvement.
Lunch and an information market will be followed by several sub-sessions and excursions around the city. The day will end with a joint session and networking drinks. The National Green Day is aimed at green professionals, policymakers and administrators. Participation is free, but there is room for a maximum of 200 participants. During the day, we will jointly explore how greenery beautifies the city as well as enhancing social dynamics. Green connects!
