Rotterdam is growing. Urban densification, mobility, cables and pipes… The pressure on trees and green spaces is increasing every year. At the same time, we want healthier, climate-proof and liveable cities. How do you make smart choices in a complex environment that make a difference, not only for today, but for decades to come?
During this winter walk, you will get a unique insight into the practice of sustainable tree management in the city. Guide Ronald Loch (also known as the tree doctor) will show you how Rotterdam deals with monumental trees and all the considerations that come with it. From soil structure to tree safety and from root growth routes to design choices when renovating parks.
Programme
Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen → Museumpark
We will meet at Depot Boijmans Van Beuningen, a recognisable and easily accessible starting point. From there, we will walk towards the Museumpark. Along the way, Ronald will talk about renovations, soil structure and the design of growing areas. You will see unusual tree species and discover the history of the area.
Het Park (1852) – monumental trees & design choices
We then cross over to Het Park, one of Rotterdam’s oldest city parks. Here, Ronald will discuss monumental trees such as the Veteran Tree and the King’s Tree. You will learn what is involved in designing around large and old trees and what you should and should not do.
Renovation of Het Park
We will take a detailed look at the ongoing renovation of Het Park, a project that started in 2011. The main route is currently being renewed, and the existing asphalt is being replaced by Stabilizer semi-paving. You will see how this is being done on site.
During the walk, you will hear how design choices are made, what challenges are involved and how Rotterdam is working on a future-proof green structure.
