This summer, landscape architects from Strootman Landscape Architects visited Van den Berk Nurseries. The aim of the day was to share and deepen knowledge.
‘We discussed a wide range of topics: from challenges such as climate adaptation, biodiversity and circular greenery, to practical experiences with the use of trees in both urban and landscape projects. We shared both good and less successful examples. Questions such as ‘What should you pay attention to when planting trees?’, ‘What risks do you encounter?“ and ‘How can design teams be better composed so that knowledge is called upon at the right moment?” were discussed at length. This yielded valuable insights.
Guided tour and practical experience
The discussions were followed by a tour of the nursery. Here, we were able to link ongoing projects to the range and critically evaluate our choices for trees. There was also plenty of opportunity to exchange visions and design ideas, with the grower able to contribute his thoughts on feasibility.
During the field visit, among the trees themselves, we discussed the latest developments and technologies in tree cultivation and learned about inspiring new species and cultivars. We also received practical tips on assessing the quality of trees. For example, what does the growth habit say about future sustainability? And – important for us – how can you make better choices for each project that suit the soil, climate and maintenance requirements? We also discussed availability and dimensions.
This visit once again highlights the importance of exchanging knowledge and seeking advice at an early stage. A visit to the nursery not only provides practical knowledge and creative inspiration, but also strengthens the collaboration between design and implementation.

For landscape architects, there is clear added value in such a visit. It allows you to build a strong network and lasting relationships with growers, enabling you to respond more quickly and intelligently. It also creates opportunities for joint innovation, for example with new species or ecological concepts. It helps you to better advise clients and improve the quality of your projects by using unique plants for distinctive designs. In short: we found the visit very informative and inspiring and would definitely recommend it to fellow professionals!
