Landscape architect Samuel Voorhoeve (1880–1948) was a champion of preserving ‘natural landscape beauty’. This vision was reflected in his 240 designs for estates, parks and gardens, as well as in the layout of villa parks, avenues and squares.

Voorhoeve designed throughout the Netherlands, but the focus of his work was on the southern Veluwe, especially in his home town of Oosterbeek, with its unique views from the steep edge of the moraine to the Rhine Valley. The elevation map was his starting point for these designs.

While his designs grew and flourished, he himself fell into obscurity. With this book, which provides a beautiful overview of Voorhoeves’ most important works, author Ruud Schaafsma gives him the recognition he deserves. He shows that many themes are still relevant today.

Ruud Schaafsma (1948) is an IVN nature guide and has been closely involved with the Veluwe springs and watermills for decades. He has written several cultural-historical books about the southern Veluwe and Iceland.
