The Walk & Talk #Technical is one of the NVTL meetings around the theme ‘Looking differently: how do we shape the symbiotic landscape?’
In the Dutch-language NVTL Walk & Talk podcast, we take you on a tour of a garden or landscape project in the Netherlands. Together with members of the NVTL, we explore various locations and immerse ourselves in the stories of the garden and landscape architects and designers, clients and managers who have brought these places to life.

For this fifth episode of the NVTL Walk & Talk podcast, we accepted an invitation from NVTL partner ecoDynamic to join a diverse group of landscape architects and municipal representatives on a cycling and walking excursion to the Waalkade and Park Brakkenstein in Nijmegen. Two special projects have been highlighted, where historical quality, climate adaptation and space for events are cleverly combined.
On the Waalkade, Bas de Beijer and Arthur Nijhof, senior advisors on greenery and water management at the Municipality of Nijmegen, explained how the quay has changed in recent years. From a stony car park to a versatile, green recreational area that is part of a green corridor. The technical and practical aspects of Grass Parking were discussed, such as load-bearing capacity, water management and maintenance. The reasons why the turf can withstand 1.5 million Four Days Marches visitors or a funfair, and recovers quickly after flooding from the Waal.
After a break at Hortus Nijmegen, landscape architect Evelien De Mey gave the group a tour of the historic Park Brakkenstein. Evelien showed how the botanical garden, the eighteenth-century star forest and the nineteenth-century villa, nature and use, come together in a future-proof way. She talked about the phased restoration of the avenues, tree management, biodiversity, elephant paths, the use of Stabilizer and of poetry texts in the paths.
