On behalf of NVTL, board member Stijn van de Ven, chair of Young NVTL, received the 2025 Yearbook of Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning in the Netherlands on 13 December. Professional magazine Blauwe Kamer presented the 21st edition of the yearbook during a well-attended afternoon event at the Lutheran Church in Breda. Stijn reported on the meeting and the walking route along Breda’s Nieuwe Mark:
“The 2025 yearbook is a testament to the relationship we as designers have with the users and managers of our plans. As designers, we are responsible for devising solutions for the large collection of tasks, but once it has been constructed and the plan comes to life, motivation must also play a role in its use and management in order to take it further with that idea in mind.”
Take the fantastic ecological quay wall of the Nieuwe Mark as an example: you can see that the designers have put a tremendous amount of time and effort into the ecological effectiveness of the wall. It doesn’t help if the managers would dutifully scrape away the ferns, mainly because they are not used to doing otherwise. In this case, the designers have involved the managers in the work, so that they can experiment together and learn how to improve things.”
After three special excursions through the host city of Breda – a walk along the Nieuwe Mark (pictured), a walk through the railway zone and a cycling excursion to the Heuvel reconstruction neighbourhood and the adjacent Zaartpark – editor-in-chief Mark Hendriks and councillor Eddie Förster welcomed the attendees. Chair of the selection committee Yttje Feddes explained the selection process, after which designers Leonieke Heldens (Arcadis), Kristian Koreman (ZUS), Maarten Lankester (Urhahn) and Laura de Bonth (Urban Synergy) discussed their selected projects. In a duo discussion, landscape architect Harold van den Broek and urban planner Peter van Schie discussed Breda’s ambition to develop as a “city in a park”.
After unveiling the cover, the first copies of the yearbook were presented to Councillor Eddie Förster, Chief Government Architect Francesco Veenstra and representatives of BNSP and NVTL. The yearbook contains 22 promising projects, selected from 165 submissions. Starting this week, the 2025 Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning Yearbook is available in bookshops and through Uitgeverij Blauwdruk.
The 2025 Landscape Architecture and Urban Planning Yearbook is a collection of the most beautiful and exemplary work produced in these fields over the past year. It features 22 inspiring projects that contribute to healthy and sustainable cities and landscapes. Worn-out squares and office areas are given a new lease of life, sometimes through radical interventions. Surprising garden designs and new planting concepts create green oases in the city. And sharing spaces and facilities not only saves space, but also creates socially cohesive residential communities. Water plays a crucial role in the transitions in rural areas, but also in the redevelopment of city centres where old waterways are being restored in a contemporary way. By paying attention to heritage and landscape, the urban composition gains in quality.
The projects in this yearbook have been selected by an independent committee of peers. The editors of Blauwe Kamer magazine compiled the book and highlight current themes in interviews and essays.
